Gyeonggi to Reward Social Benefit Violation Whistleblowers

Greetings, everyone, and thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV. I’m Don Valiant and this is the news from Gyeonggi Province this week. Gyeonggi to Reward Social Benefit Violation Whistleblowers (1125) Gyeonggi Province will reward 13 whistleblowers who reported violations of social benefit laws including the Social Welfare Act, the Waste Management Act, and the Infant and Child Care Act. Thanks to these reports, the province was able to uncover illegal practices such as social welfare enterprises that profited through illicit activities and dog farms that used food waste as feed. To protect whistleblowers and provide them with legal advice prior to reporting, the province accepts anonymous reports by proxy through legal representatives. ◇ All Sections of Gyeonggi Trails Open (1125) On November 15, all 60 sections of the Gyeonggi Trails opened. Connecting foot trails including forest paths and riverside promenades in 15 cities and counties of the province, these trails run 860 kilometers in total. An agreement between Gyeonggi Province and the Northern Regional Office of the Forest Service also enables trekkers to pass through national forests located along the trails. The province plans to expand the trails throughout all of Gyeonggi, developing the trails as a representative and integrated provincial brand. ◇ New Ordinance Aids Installation of Street Cat Feeding Stations (1125) With a new animal protection ordinance taking effect this month, Gyeonggi Province is launching diverse initiatives to help animals coexist with humans. This ordinance includes a new provision pertaining to the installation and management of street cat feeding stations in residential park areas. In addition, the province plans to designate a Street Cat Neutering Day in order to more effectively control street cat numbers. ◇   Fire Safety Instructor Recruitment Competition Held in Gyeonggi (1120) On November 16, a competition was held in Gyeonggi Province to recruit exceptional fire safety instructors. This contest saw 10 fire officials compete in 5 categories, including fire prevention and fire safety, with each competitor giving a 20-minute instruction demonstration. The finals of this competition will take place in December. ◇ Gyeonggi’s Agricultural Food Exports Undaunted by COVID-19 (1122) The agricultural food exports of Gyeonggi Province for the first 3 quarters of this year were the highest since 2008 and marked a 13 percent year-on-year increase. The province expects this year’s total exports to exceed the original target. The province will continue related endeavors – including the organization of overseas trade fairs in seven nations such as the United States and Vietnam, as well as online business consultation events – so as to promote quality agricultural products of the province including pears, ginseng and kimchi. ◇ Gyeonggi Receives Presidential Award for Forest Fire Prevention (1122) Gyeonggi Province received the 2021 Presidential Award for Forest Fire Prevention in the organization category. The presidential awards are presented to individuals, public officials, groups and organizations that have contributed to the prevention of forest fires. To fight forest fires, Gyeonggi Province allocates annual budgets to forest fire control, fire helicopter rental and related measures while operating a response headquarters during forest fire season. ◇   Global Semiconductor Equipment Leader ASML Invests in Gyeonggi (1119) ASML, a global leader in semiconductor equipment, recently signed an MOU with Gyeonggi Province for the establishment of an ASML complex. Based on the MOU, ASML will develop its complex in the Dongtan (동탄) area of Hwaseong (화성) City and operate an extensive education center for the cultivation of specialists and the provision of educational and research support to local students. The province expects this complex to grow together with local communities through benefits such as customer response acceleration, personnel cultivation, and domestic semiconductor supply chain enhancement. ◇ Thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV.
